Miss Noelle was honored to be a guest on Episode #57 of the SLP Toolkit Podcast "True Confessions with Lisa & Sarah". During this episode, three SLPs discuss how Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is unique from other speech disorders, including treatment and diagnosis. Though CAS is a speech disorder, it impacts many other areas of a child’s (and their family’s) life. This podcast conversation provides SLPs with the tools and insight to bring into their clinical experiences with current and future clients.The episode is live now wherever you stream your podcasts.

Today marks one year of our private practice!

One of our FAVORITE summer activities in the northern Pittsburgh area is going to pick blueberries at Bowser's Blueberries in Renfrew, PA! It is such a fun and engaging activity to bring your little ones to. Plus, there are so many ways to work on your child’s speech and language abilities while you’re there picking berries. Read through below to see some out of ideas from our pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, Miss Noelle, AND a yummy lemon and blueberry recipe to make with the berries you pick!

1. Describe the Blueberries!

While you may think a blueberry is a blueberry, there actually are many different varieties of blueberries, which have different flavors and qualities to them.

At Bowser's Blueberries, they have multiple varieties of blueberries, so you can use this to work on comparing and contrasting with your child or describing.

Are the berries dark blue, light blue, more of a purple color, etc.?

What is the texture of the berry? Is it squishy? Is the outside smooth or wrinkly?

How does the blueberry taste? Sweet? Tarte?

Try to work with your child on describing blueberries beyond just saying they are blue.

2. B is for Blueberry

Practice your child's words that start with the B sound! Try practicing a word each time your child drops a berry in the bucket.

Remind your child to put their lips together for the B sound and turn their voice on.

Here are some initial B words:

3. Talk about action words while you pick

Work on action words (or verbs) while you walk through the blueberry fields with your child.

Here are some action words you might talk about:

Walk: walking through the field
Pick: picking the berries from the tree
Drop: putting the berries into the bag or bucket
Choose: to pick which blueberry your child wants
Pull: pulling the berries off the bush
Eat/Taste: trying the blueberries

4. Books About Blueberries!

Your child might enjoy reading a storybook about blueberries before or after you go blueberry picking. (This book is also available as read alouds on YouTube if you don't own the book already.)

This book has great rhyming, counting and opportunities to label animals.

5. Work on Sequencing and Following Directions by making a recipe with your blueberries!

Ingredients:

2 cups of Bisquick (you can use Gluten Free Bisquick if needed)
2/3 cup of milk (or dairy free milk alternative)
1 egg
2 tablespoons of olive oil
3/4 cup of blueberries
2 tablespoons of lemon juice

Steps:

First, we get out the ingredients.
Then, we mix them together in a bowl.
Next, pour the batter into muffin tins and put it in the oven.
Bake the muffins at 400 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes or until your knife comes out clean.
Last, enjoy your blueberry lemon muffins!

Does the new Barbie movie have you feeling nostalgic?? Do you want to get all your Barbies and Barbie Dream Houses out of storage to play with them with your children?

If so, here are three fun ways to work on speech and language skills with your children, such as pretend play skills, describing and more!

1. Teacher Barbie!

A lot of times, our little ones LOVE playing pretend where they are the teacher, don't they?
Use this to your advantage and have your child "teach" their Barbie doll their speech sounds.

As a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist, I love incorporating children's dolls or stuffed animals and using that to have them practice their sounds.

"Don't forget to tell Barbie about keeping her tongue in for her S sound."
"Can you think of a word that starts with R for Barbie to say?"
"What does Barbie need to do with her lips to make her SH sound?"

2. House Vocabulary!

Do you still have your Barbie Dream House?!

Get it back out of storage and use it to work on some home-themed vocabulary words with your child.

For younger children, point to items and identify/label what they are. You can also label items your child picks up or points to.
For older children, ask them to label the item or tell you what the function of the item is. 'What do we do with an oven?" "Where do we go swimming?"

You can also work on describing for extra practice! Use words that describe the shape, texture, size and color of the items within the dream house.

3. Community Helpers

We all know Barbie has a lot of jobs!

Use this to talk about Community Helpers and types of jobs with your child.

To work on responding to questions, you can try using a "who" question.

"Who helps animals when they feel sick?"

"Who helps people when they feel sick?"

"Who goes into outer space?"

You can then keep the conversation going and ask your child if they would want to have that job. Why or why not?

Introducing...Easy Peasy Speech LLC!

I am excited to introduce you to Easy Peasy Speech, a private practice offering pediatric speech-language therapy in the northern Pittsburgh area. We offer one-on-one therapy sessions that we adapt to meet the needs of each child and to help them meet their goals so they can effectively communicate with others. EasyPeasy Speech offers convenient options for sessions, including teletherapy sessions with our certified teletherapy Speech-Language Pathologist.

Our mission is to provide play-based and evidence-based therapy using a variety of activities that keep the child engaged and excited about communication. We strive to involve the families and caretakers in the therapy process, incorporate their goals in the therapy plan, and include them in an easy at-home practice plan to ensure carryover of taught speech-language skills.

At Easy Peasy Speech, we know how critical communicating and feeling heard are in this world, and we want to help the children in the northern Pittsburgh area feel heard so they can express themselves with those who are most important to them.
